20 Chin test of Chin-San qualification system of Russian School of Go and Strategy checks the understanding of the rules of Go game (Weiqi). The Yuan Dynasty board (1279-1368) is chosen as a playground. The board was made as a stone for ink rubbing by the unknown master from Northern China. It belongs to the collection of E&J Frankel Gallery founded in New York.
Originally the playground has a greenish colour that was saved by a designer Julia Ryabinina. The stones have traditional Yi-Weiqi colors: red symbolizing the earth and blue symbolizing the sky.
Tasks are taken from the battles between the masters of Ancient China including the game between the ruler Lu Fan and his warlord Sun Ce. The record of this battle, which is suddenly interrupted on the 43rd position, is dated 2nd century AC. It is recorded in one of the most ancient books devoted to Weiqi called "Forget Worry Pure Happy Collection" (忘憂清樂集).
Other tasks are created on the basis of seven famous battles between two masters: expectant official Jia Xuan and Yang Xican. The title of the first one implies that he taught Weiqi to the Emperor of Tan Dynasty (12th century), and there is no detailed information about the second one. These games are recorded in the six volumes on Weiqi, «Gateway to All Marvels» collection (玄玄棋經) (14th century).
There will be eight questions in the test covering four topics: count of stones’ breaths, forbidden positions, capture of stones and Ko-fight. Each question has three variants of answer marked with letters on the diagram. The area of the question is whitened on the diagram with a bright circle. Each question has its black-and-white presentation for people with a defect in colour perception. Choose the variant that you consider to be correct and tick it in the field under the diagram.
If you answer correctly all the eight questions, you will be awarded a 20 Chin certificate.
